Electron Microscopy of the Operation of Nanoscale Devices

چکیده
A transmission electron microscope (TEM) is much more than just a tool for imaging the static state of materials. To demonstrate this, we present work on studying the mechanical and electrical properties of carbon nanotube devices. Multiwall carbon nanotubes are concentrically stacked tubular sheets of graphite, where the spacing between each cylinder is simply the natural spacing of graphite. Using a custom-built in-situ nanomanipulation probe, we have shown that it is possible to slide the nanotube layers in a telescopic extension mode that exhibits low friction, demonstrating the potential of nanotubes as the ultimate synthetic nanobearing. During this telescopic extension, the electrical resistance of the nanotube devices increases, opening the possibility that these devices can also be used as nanoscale rheostats. We also briefly describe work on using electron holography inside a TEM to study the electric field distribution in nanotube field-emission devices and on using a nanotube itself as a biprism for electron holography. These measurements together demonstrate the wealth of information that can be obtained and frontiers that can be opened by putting operational nanodevices inside an electron

Nanometer-Scale Patterning on PMMA Resist by Force Microscopy Lithography
Nanoscale science and technology has today mainly focused on the fabrication of nano devices. In this paper, we study the use of lithography process to build the desired nanostructures directly. Nanolithography on polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) surface is carried out by using Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) equipped with silicon tip, in contact mode. The analysis of the results shows that the ...
متن کاملSynthesis and Characterization of Nano-Structure Copper Oxide From Two Different Copper (II) Metal-Organic Framework Precursors
Nano-structured copper oxides were successfully prepared through direct calcination of 1D ladderlike metal-organic framework [Cu2(btec)(2,2'-bipy)2]∞, (btec = 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylate and 2,2'-bipy = 2,2'-bipyridine) and porous coordination polymer [Cu(BDC)(bipy)](BDCH2), (BDC = 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate; bipy = 4,4'-bipyridine). The nano-structure of the as-synthesized samples are charac...
متن کاملComparison of resistive switching characteristics using copper and aluminum electrodes on GeOx/W cross-point memories
Comparison of resistive switching memory characteristics using copper (Cu) and aluminum (Al) electrodes on GeOx/W cross-points has been reported under low current compliances (CCs) of 1 nA to 50 μA. The cross-point memory devices are observed by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). Improved memory characteristics are observed for the Cu/GeOx/W structures as compared to the ...
متن کاملObservation of conducting filament growth in nanoscale resistive memories.
Nanoscale resistive switching devices, sometimes termed memristors, have recently generated significant interest for memory, logic and neuromorphic applications. Resistive switching effects in dielectric-based devices are normally assumed to be caused by conducting filament formation across the electrodes, but the nature of the filaments and their growth dynamics remain controversial. Here we r...

Three-dimensional (3D) reconstructions from electron tomography provide important morphological, compositional, optical and electro-magnetic information across a wide range of materials and devices. Precession electron diffraction, in combination with scanning transmission electron microscopy, can be used to elucidate the local orientation of crystalline materials. Here we show, using the examp...
